We consider a mixed problem for the wave equation with discontinuous initial conditions and a noncharacteristic boundary condition. This problem models a longitudinal impact on the free end of a finite rod of constant cross-section. We seek a classical solution for the problem under consideration and establish conditions for its existence and uniqueness.
