Development of methods of improving the quality of 40x steel joints obtained by electron beam welding

Abstract

To improve the quality of joints made of 40X structural steel obtained by electron beam welding, it is effective to use a number of methods, including: preheating of billets with an electron beam to temperatures of 300–400°C and placing a titanium filler tape into the welding zone. The influence of these technological methods on the microstructure and microhardness of the welded joints has been studied. It is shown that the preheating of billets prevents the formation of hardening structures in welding seams, while the placement of the filler tape into the welding zone prevents from the appearance of hot cracks and other defects.
